Victoria Private Investment Office
The financial adviser and wealth management business, previously Victoria Capital, has relaunched as it aims to reach a wider market. Leading the firm’s expansion is Heather Maizels, the former head of Barclays Private Bank, who has been appointed as managing director. As an advisory board member of Barclays Wealth, which she helped build from scratch, Maizels championed family philanthropy, the wider investment needs of women, and Art Wealth services for collectors.
Generator Hostels
The European hostel operator backed by private equity group Patron Capital has appointed Carl Michel as executive chairman. Michel was formerly CEO of Deutsche BA GmbH, Energis-Ision AG and Holidaybreak, and commercial director of British Airways.
Sanlam UK
The South African financial services group has appointed Johan van der Merwe as its new chairman. Van der Merwe joined Sanlam Investment Management as chief executive in 2002, based in South Africa.
Berwin Leighton Paisner
The law firm has appointed Marc Hanson, a partner at Ashurst, as a partner and head of its engineering, construction and procurement group. The law firm has also hired senior associate Akhil Markanday, previously at Allen & Overy, who will join the London real estate disputes team later this month.
Baker Tilly
Ken Almand, a specialist in transfer pricing, has joined Baker Tilly as a tax partner. Almand joins from Mazars, where he led the London transfer pricing team; prior to that, he was an international tax specialist at HM Revenue & Customs.
Partners Capital
The private investment office has appointed Janie Chen and Charlotte Plowman as the heads of its newly opened Hong Kong office. Chen relocates to Hong Kong from Partners Capital’s London office, and Plowman joins from Sail Advisors.
DLA Piper
Mark McGiddy has been appointed as a partner to the finance and projects group in the law firm’s structured finance team. McGiddy joins from Deutsche Bank, where he was a director in the global markets structuring team.
OMAM
Old Mutual Asset Managers has appointed Julian Ide, previously head of institutional business at BBVA Asset Management, as chief executive and head of global distribution. Ide succeeds Peter Baxter, who is leaving the asset management business to pursue other opportunities.
