BBC Worldwide
Tom Fussell has been appointed as chief financial officer at BBC Worldwide. He has extensive experience of the TV and wider media industry, having worked in global media organisations for 20 years. Most recently, Tom was finance chief of Shine from 2013 to 2015, leading a global finance function across 11 markets. He moved on from this role having successfully completed the sale of Shine into a new joint venture, as part of its merger with Endemol. Prior to this Tom spent three years at Harper Collins UK in a variety of commercial director roles, having previously been the finance director for Random House in the UK. Between 1997 and 2007 he held a variety of finance roles at the BBC. Mike qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG and post-qualification spent three years in its media & entertainment department. Tom’s new appointment takes effect from 3 May.
Markel
Specialist insurer Markel has appointed Torgny Johansson as managing director of its Swedish business. After an earlier career at McKinsey, Torgny has nine years’ experience in the insurance industry. He joins from Trygg Hansa, where he held a number of senior positions, most recently, as head of its affinity groups business. In his new role, Torgny will be based in Stockholm and will be responsible for driving Markel’s development across the Scandinavian region. Meanwhile, Sarah Everall has also been appointed as assistant livestock underwriter in Markel’s equine and livestock division. She started her career in the City as a money broker for Tradition UK and in 2010 joined Chaucer as a cargo underwriting assistant.
Powell Gilbert
Powell Gilbert, the international intellectual property law firm, has promoted two senior associates – Bethan Hopewell and Peter Damerell – to partner. Bethan has been with Powell Gilbert since its founding in 2007, and advises clients in a variety of sectors, ranging from electronics and telecoms to pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, with a focus on multi-jurisdictional intellectual property litigation. Peter, who joined the firm in 2009, has advised clients on a wide range of contentious IP matters including patent, trademark, design rights and copyright disputes. He has significant experience in contributing to and coordinating multi-jurisdictional patent litigation strategies across Europe, North America and Japan. Powell Gilbert has also hired two new associates, Ayesha Raghib and Dina Fahmy. Ayesha advises on European medicine regulatory law. She has a PhD in pharmacology from UCL and worked as a research scientist before moving into law, and was previously in-house counsel at an international pharmaceutical company. Dina trained as a solicitor at Allen & Overy. She has particular experience in patent litigation, multi-jurisdictional actions and arbitration in relation to the misuse of information. In addition, senior associate Alex Borthwick has been made Of Counsel. He has been with the firm since 2008.
