Cherries and Saints book final date
IN-FORM Northampton Saints ran in four tries to sink sorry Saracens 31-20 and book their place in Sunday’s LV= Cup final.
A first half try from Phil Dowson and further scores from Brian Mujati, Paul Diggin and Neil Best handed the Saints a final date with Premiership rivals Gloucester, who earlier beat Cardiff Blues 29-18.
The Saints are yet to win a domestic cup final in four attempts, but will fancy their chances of breaking that duck at Worcester’s Sixways Stadium with the Cherry and Whites 20 points behind them in the league table.
That said, Gloucester looked impressive in avenging their crushing 50-12 defeat to the Blues in last year’s Anglo Welsh final with England hopeful James Simpson-Daniel touching down for a hat-trick of tries after Freddie Burns earlier crossed.
The Saints though, will be equally buoyed by their victory, albeit against a Saracens side, who have now lost six of their last seven games.
Brendan Venter’s Sarries were battered in the scrum and rarely threatened the Saints try-line, although Justin Melck did touch down for a late consolation try.
