Champions League: United make a point but Moyes demands more
SHAKHTAR DONETSK 1 vs MANCHESTER UNITED 1
UNDER-FIRE Manchester United boss David Moyes insists it is too early to talk of a revival despite his side doing what no English club has done before and earning a point at Shakhtar Donetsk last night.
England striker Danny Welbeck poked the visitors ahead early on and although Brazilian midfielder Taison lashed in a late equalizer it could not prevent United from topping their Champions League group.
Moyes, criticised for a poor start to his tenure as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, felt his team should have won but took satisfaction from outdoing Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea, who all lost at the Donbass Arena.
“It’s a big point here,” he said. “They’ve got a great record against English teams. We got a goal early doors and looked like stopping them. We were really unlucky to lose a goal.”
Yet Moyes added that United, with just one win from four games and a drubbing by Manchester City fresh in the memory, had not turned a corner.
“All it is is a point in the Champions League,” he said. “It doesn’t takes us anywhere further just now.”
Both goals came from crosses that were only partially stopped, Welbeck prodding in from six yards after 18 minutes and Taison finding the roof of the net 12 minutes from time.
