Cavendish demands Ferrari axe after crash in Giro stage climax
BRITAIN’S Mark Cavendish called for Roberto Ferrari to be thrown out of cycling’s Giro d’Italia after the Italian rider took him out just 100 yards from the finishing line of stage three yesterday.
Team Sky’s Cavendish suffered a nasty scrape that tore through his shorts when Androni Giocattoli’s Ferrari cut across his front wheel in a sprint finish to the stage in Horsens, Denmark.
The Manxman, who won Sunday’s second stage, was able to carry his bike across the line but later took to Twitter to strongly criticise Ferrari and demand action from governing body the UCI.
“Ouch! Crashing at 75kph isn’t nice! Nor is seeing Roberto Ferrari’s manoeuvre. Should be ashamed to take out Pink, Red & World Champ jerseys,” he wrote.
“Is the team of Roberto Ferrari or the UCI going to do the right thing? Other riders, including myself, have been sent home for much less.”
Race leader Taylor Phinney also tumbled in the melee but retained his nine-second advantage over Cavendish’s team-mate and fellow Briton Geraint Thomas.
