Carnival flatlines as death toll rises
SHARES in Carnival, the owner of the stricken Costa Concordia cruise ship, yesterday closed up only 1.6 per cent after suffering a 16.4 per cent fall on Monday. Details of the accident continued to emerge as divers found another five bodies, taking the death toll to 11, with 23 people still unaccounted for. The investigation is focusing on the role of captain Francesco Schettino, who has been charged with manslaughter and abandoning his ship, and placed under house arrest. Proving that human error was to blame has enormous implications for both the ship’s insurers and future sales of cruise holidays. The boat continues to slip, raising the prospect of environmental damage if its 2,300 tonnes of fuel escape into the sea.
