Call of Duty Advanced Warfare was the best-selling game of 2014
The $10bn Call of Duty franchise continued to deliver the goods in 2014.
Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, the 11th console installment in the franchise, has been named the best-selling game of 2014 in the US.
What’s more, Call of Duty: Ghosts – released in November 2013 to lukewarm reviews – was still the 10th best-selling game last year.
Football’s growing popularity in the US was also demonstrated by the Fifa franchise entering the top 10 for the third consecutive year. Fifa 13 was the first installment of the franchise to finish in the top 10 when it crept onto the list in 2012.
The list was put together by gaming analyst group NPD who said total industry sales rose one per cent to $13.1bn, from $12.94bn in 2013.
Sales were driven by the success of the growth of the latest generation of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
Group analyst Liam Callahan commented:
After 14 months on the market, cumulative sales of PS4 and Xbox One exceed the Xbox 360 and PS3 cumulative total by 65 per cent.
Individual sales figures for games or consoles were not disclosed.
