Buncefield sentence to be handed down today
A JUDGE will today hand down a sentence expected to run into the millions to companies linked to the 2005 Buncefield explosion.
Today the St Alban’s Crown Court will sentence five companies for their involvement in the disaster, which caused damage spreading over a 450-metre area north of London and injured more than 40 people.
Last month, Hertfordshire Oil Storage Limited (HOSL), a joint venture between Total and Chevron, was found guilty by the court of breaching health and safety laws in connection to the explosion.
Motherwell Control Systems 2003 and TAV Engineering were also found guilty by the court.
The court battle is considered to be one of the largest pieces of litigation in the UK and expectations are that the sentence will run into the millions.
A vapour cloud from a petrol spillage caused the explosion.
