Brown and Cameron make their pleas to Clegg
GORDON Brown and David Cameron have set out their stall as they try to grab power with a deal with the Liberal Democrats.
Brown said he is prepared to talk to any of the party leaders after the election ended in a hung parliament.
The Prime Minister, speaking in Downing Street, said it was time to negotiate for the sake of the country.
He said: “What we have seen are no ordinary election results. We find ourselves in a position unknown to this generation of political leaders.”
David Cameron and Nick Clegg “should clearly be entitled to take as much time as they see necessary” to consider their positions, he added.
Brown continues as prime minister as no party gained an absolute majority.
Meanwhile Cameron made a “big, open and comprehensive offer” to the Liberal Democrats.
He said that while they had policy differences there was also common ground.
Cameron said that the “bulk” of the Conservatives’ election manifesto would be introduced in any power sharing deal, there were also areas in which the party could compromise in the national interest.
