British pair showed mettle at US Open
ON THE GREENS WITH
SAM TORRANCE
LUCAS GLOVER may have taken the US Open title this week, but there was cause for cheer for Ross Fisher and Rory McIlroy.
Englishman Fisher continued his encouraging form by finishing fifth at Bethpage Black, and was still fighting it out with the leaders until the very end. Prodigious Northern Irishman McIlroy, meanwhile, impressed on his debut by taking a share of 10th. His two-under-par 68 was one of the lowest of the final round and, after a top-20 showing at the Masters, can only bode well.
Eternal bridesmaid Phil Mickelson was beaten into second for a record fifth time, but if he keeps playing like that his moment will surely come.
