British pair powerless to stop second round exits at Queen’s
BRITISH No2 Dan Evans conceded he was powerless against the serve of
6ft 8in Kevin Anderson yesterday, after bowing out of the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club in round two.
Anderson, seeded seventh, won 94 per cent of first serve points and delivered 10 aces to win 6-2, 6-3 in just 65 minutes.
Evans, who revealed earlier this week he is being hampered by a knee injury, said: “He was banging that serve down from a tree.
“It was an annoying match, I didn’t really get the chance to play any tennis. It couldn’t have been a good one to watch.”
Compatriot James Ward was also defeated in straight sets, losing 7-5, 6-4 to No4 seed Grigor Dimitrov.
World No60 Marinko Matosevic caused an upset with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over ninth seed Marin Cilic, then criticised reigning champion Andy Murray’s decision to hire Amelie Mauresmo as his coach.
He said: “I couldn’t do it since I don’t think that highly of the women’s game. It’s all equal rights these days. You’ve got to be politically correct. So, yeah, someone’s got to give it a go, but it won’t be me.”
Murray begins his grass court season today against Henri-Paul Mathieu and is scheduled to appear second on centre court.
