Boxer Nick Blackwell could come out of coma on Tuesday
Boxer Nick Blackwell could be brought out of an induced coma on Tuesday after his camp issued a positive update on his condition last night.
Trainer Gary Lockett said the 25-year-old middleweight from Wiltshire remained “heavily sedated” but was “not deteriorating” 48 hours after his British title fight with Chris Eubank Jr.
Blackwell was found to have suffered bleeding on the brain following the bout, which he left on a stretcher after it was stopped in the 10th round because of his severe swelling over one eye.
Chris Eubank Sr, whose 1991 contest with Michael Watson left his rival with brain damage, told his son mid-fight to aim for Blackwell’s body rather than his face because he was suffering too much.
“If the referee doesn’t stop it, then I don’t know what to tell you,” Eubank Sr said after the eighth round.
“But if he doesn’t stop it and you keep on beating him like this, one: he is getting hurt; two: if it goes to a decision, why hasn’t the referee stopped the fight? I don’t get why. So maybe you shouldn’t leave it to the referee. But you are not going to take him out to the face. You are going to take him out to the body.”
