Blues veterans can play to 40, says Di Matteo
CHELSEA interim manager Robert di Matteo believes his ageing side’s FA Cup triumph shows they are more than capable of further success and are not the declining force they appeared until his appointment.
Since Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas in March, Chelsea’s form has improved so much that they won the FA Cup with Saturday’s 2-1 final victory over Liverpool, have reached the Champions League final, and are back in serious contention for a top-four Premier League finish.
“If you live a professional life and train well, you can prolong your career,” said Di Matteo, who has reversed his predecessor’s tendency to phase out Chelsea’s veterans.
“We have many examples over the last 10 years of players who have carried on to 38 or 40.
“Obviously, physiologically things change a little bit because your recovery time will be a little bit different. But careers are much longer now than 15 year ago.”
The Italian’s words are reassuring for several Chelsea players, among them striker Didier Drogba, 34, whose contract is set to expire in the summer. Drogba underlined his continued effectiveness with the decisive goal against Liverpool, whom the Blues visit tonight.
Three points would keep Chelsea in contention for the top four, while a draw would leave them on 62 points – four behind fourth-placed Tottenham – with one game left.
