Bjorn shocked by own course record
THREE-TIME Major runner-up Thomas Bjorn confessed his course-record 62 on the opening day of the BMW PGA Championship left even himself scratching his head.
The Dane took advantage of soft greens as a consequence of overnight rain at Wentworth to sink eight birdies and an eagle to finish on 10 under par, two shots ahead of Ireland’s Shane Lowry.
Bjorn, 43, said: “Last week [Spanish Open] was awful and I was starting to feel a little frustrated with things. To step out on this course of all courses and play like I did was surprising.”
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is six shots off the pace, while world No7 Sergio Garcia has withdrawn due to a knee problem.
