Barclays brings Goldman man onto its board
BARCLAYS named Goldman Sachs veteran Reuben Jeffery as a non-executive director yesterday, on the same day the Walker report called for more banking expertise on bank’s boards.
The bank said Jeffery, who served in the US government as under secretary of state for economic, energy and agricultural affairs from 2007 until earlier this year, joins its board with immediate effect.
Barclays also named Sir Richard Broadbent as its deputy chairman, replacing Nigel Rudd, who retired from the post in April.
Broadbent was previously chairman of the bank’s remuneration and board risk committees.
Yale and Stanford graduate Jeffery spent 18 years at Goldman, including as managing partner in Paris and head of its European financial institutions group in London.
He left Goldman to become a special adviser on the development of lower Manhattan after the September 2001 attacks in New York and held other government positions under George W. Bush’s administration.
Separately, Patience Wheatcroft stood down from the Barclays board last month after accepting the role of editor-in-chief for Europe at The Wall Street Journal.
