Babcock venture set to win nuclear clean-up job
BABCOCK Dounreay Partnership (BDP) is the preferred bidder to demolish and clean up a nuclear site in Dounreay, Scotland, in a deal worth upwards of £2.6bn.
After a two-year public procurement process, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority said it hopes to transfer ownership of the plant from the UK’s nuclear authority to Babcock and its partners by April.
The site, which was a fast reactor research centre from 1955 to 1994, contains up to 190,000 cubic metres of radioactive material.
Companies bidding for the job had to show they could beat the current 2038 closure date by six years and cut costs by at least £500m.
Babcock bid in partnership with CH2M Hill and URS Holdings.
