Autumn price rises of up to 10 per cent expected at British Gas
BIG SIX energy supplier British Gas is expected to raise its prices by up to 10 per cent this autumn, far above the inflation rate and a greater increase than last year.
Reports claim that the firm will raise its prices in the next few weeks, in time for the winter when most gas and electricity is used, bringing the average household’s dual-fuel bill from the company up to £1,474.
British Gas – which is owned by Centrica and has over 11m customers – warned in the summer that it might increase prices this year, following a six per cent increase last year.
A British Gas spokesperson told City A.M. that the company never comments on price rise speculation and would not confirm when an announcement would be made.
It is expected that the other so-called big six suppliers – SSE, Scottish Power, npower, EDF and E.On – will follow suit and raise their prices as well.
In February, Centrica posted a nine per cent rise in full-year profit at its British Gas division after raising tariffs the previous winter,
