Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits fan protests could influence decision over his future
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his decision over whether to stay at the Emirates after this season will be influenced by fans' protests.
Speculation surrounding the Frenchman's future in North London has increased after a string of disappointing results triggered a small protest against him staying at the club before Arsenal's 5-1 pummelling at the hands of Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
Wenger's contract with Arsenal expires at the end of this season and before he puts pen to paper on a new deal to extend his 21-year stay, the 67-year-old will consider the fans' feelings on the matter.
"I consider everything. It will not be the most important factor," said the Frenchman on Thursday.
"I have worked for 20 years to make our fans happy but I understand when we lose they are not."
Some commentators have warned Wenger risks tarnishing his legacy as an Arsenal legend by staying in the dugout despite failing to win the Premier League title for 13 seasons.
Yet Wenger says he is not worried about how his tenure will be perceived after he leaves.
"I don't work for my image, I work for this club with full commitment," he said.
"How I will be judged, one way or the other, is not my problem. I think I have shown since I am here that first of all I love this club, I am loyal to this club and that I make the right decisions for this club. I will continue to do that.
"I will continue to respect the values that are vital for me and if I cannot do that I will not be here."
