Ankle injury forces Ennis to miss European Indoor Championships
Great Britain’s world and European heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis has failed to shake off a persistent ankle injury and has withdrawn from the upcoming European Indoors as a result.
An MRI scan – her third since the injury occurred in mid-February and caused her to pull out of the Grand Prix in Birmingham – has shown improvement over the past two weeks, but not enough to risk participating in Friday’s pentathlon.
“I’ve thought long and hard about whether to compete,” said Ennis.
“If I’m honest I don’t want to risk any further damage to my ankle and calf. I cannot take this risk – the World Championships has to be my priority.”
The World Championships will be held in August and September in Daegu, South Korea.
