Amplats loses £79m over South Africa strikes
Anglo American Platinum has lost ZAR1.1bn (£79m) during the four-week strike at its Rustenberg operations, the miner said today.
On average, it has lost 3,800 ounces of platinum each day, amounting to 67,000 ounces overall since the strike started on 12 September.
Attendance at the Rustenberg operations has remained below 20 per cent, and the majority of the world’s largest platinum miner’s operations there have been shut due to insufficient staff.
Amplats added that the strike will “adversely affect” the ability of it to supply chrome ore, although said its platinum and base metals deliveries will remain unaffected.
Last Friday, Amplats dismissed 12,000 striking Rustenberg miners who did not attend the disciplinary hearings.
