Is Amazon Fresh about to land on our doorsteps: Amazon signs 10-year lease for former Tesco warehouse
Amazon has signed a 10-year lease on a warehouse formerly used by Tesco fuelling speculation that it is about to launch its grocery operation Fresh in the UK.
Amazon will take on Logicor's 304,751 sq ft warehouse in Weybridge, Surrey, which have been lying empty since Tesco vacated the premises at the end of 2014.
According to trade journal Retail Week (£), Clegg Food Projects, which creates processing and distribution facilities for the food and drink industry across the globe, has been appointed to revamp the warehouse ahead of Amazon’s arrival.
Its lease will start in September, once the refurbishments have been completed.
Neither Amazon nor Logicor have commented on the nature of the move.
Amazon Fresh, a subsidiary company of the main group, delivers same day and early morning fresh produce and meals from local shops and restaurants.
It was beta tested in Seattle during 2007 before being rolled out to other cities inlcuding LA, San Francisco, San Diego and New York City throughout 2014 and 2014.
