Al Jazeera network to cut 500 jobs
Qatari-owned Al Jazeera has announced that it will be cutting 500 jobs.
While the cuts will affect posts across the world, most of the losses will be concentrated in Qatar.
Mostefa Souag, acting director general, said that he was confident the decision is "the right step".
"While our decision is consistent with those being made across the media industry worldwide, it was difficult to make nonetheless," Souag said.
He added: "However, we are confident it is the right step to ensure the Network's long-term competitiveness and reach."
The company said the reduction is part of a workforce optimisation initiative in connection with the transformation of the media landscape.
Al Jazeera launched in 1996 and has grown to have offices in over 70 cities worldwide.
Earlier this year Al Jazeera America said it was going to be shutting down its cable news channel, having shown little sign of reward after having heavily invested to break into the US market.
It said today that it will continue expanding its international digital operations and will establish new platforms in the US.
