Abta cyber attack: Travel trade group targeted
Abta, the travel trade organisation has been hit by a cyber attack resulting in the information of thousands of people and hundreds of companies being stolen.
The organisation revealed the breach happened at the end of February, with cyber attackers taking the information of 43,000 individuals and 650 Abta members. 1,000 of the files are thought to contain personal information from people who made a complaint about an Abta-registered travel agent, such as email addresses and contact details.
“I would personally like to apologise for the anxiety and concern that this incident may cause to any customer of Abta or Abta Member who may be affected," said the group's chief executive Mike Tanzer.
"It is extremely disappointing that our web server, managed for Abta through a third party web developer and hosting company, was compromised and we are taking every step we can to help those affected."
The group has informed the Information Comissioner which oversees data handling.
