Employment tribunal claims plummet as new fees come in
FEES introduced by the government last year have discouraged staff from bringing legal cases against their employer, new statistics suggest.
Figures released yesterday by the Ministry of Justice show there were 79 per cent fewer tribunals brought between October and December last year, compared to the same period in 2012.
Since July 2013 employees must pay one fee when they file a complaint against an employer, a further fee when it is heard and another charge if they want to appeal the decision. Fees can be as much as £1,200 before appeal.
Richard Fox, head of employment law at Kingsley Napley, said the figures are “concerning,” adding: “It is now clear that many employees have been deterred from bringing tribunal claims.”
