Twomey’s Trean the bet in the Acomb
DAY ONE’s Group Three Acomb Stakes (2.25pm) is the first pattern contest of the week, and is set to see a field of 11 runners going to post.
Ballydoyle, unsurprisingly, have the current favourite in the form of Haffner who arrives having just been touched off in the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.
He has a good chance, but one appeals at a bigger price and that’s TREAN for the Paddy Twomey team.
He finished an eye-catching third on debut when well backed before ultimately disappointing next time up at the Curragh.
However, he righted that wrong in style next time out when running out a dominant winner in a warm maiden at the Galway Festival.
Looking every bit up to this level, Twomey’s runners can never be ignored when he brings one over to the UK in this company and it would be no surprise to see him take a big step forward.
He looks well worthy of a Win play with World Pool, which could yield lucrative returns.
I’ll also look to play a World Pool Quinella in the race.
As mentioned, HAFFNER’s chance is a clear one and he is a solid one for any sort of exacta, but I’ll also throw in GENTLE HURRICANE, who could outrun likely big odds.
Trainer Andrew Balding won this race last year with a similarly campaigned horse in Gewan, who ran here following a winning debut before going on to win the Dewhurst.
Of course, he must step up to replicate those achievements, but he made a good impression at Salisbury so looks worth perming up with Trean and Haffner.
