1971: Lee Trevino wins the first of back-to-back Open titles at Royal Birkdale – the climax of an amazing 20 days for Supermex, now 75. After defeating Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole play-off at the Merion Golf Club to win the US Open, he won the Canadian Open and then the Open Championship, one shot ahead of Taiwan’s Lu Liang-Huan and two ahead of England’s Tony Jacklin.
