Surge in postal votes fuels fraud fears and adds pressure to system
A HUGE surge in postal votes has led to fears of electoral fraud, with as many as 50 allegations being investigated.
Some areas have seen a spike in applications for postal votes of up to 60 per cent. There is a fear the votes could be manipulated by community leaders to influence key seats.
Political analyst John Curtice told City A.M. there is “always a risk” involved with postal votes but said he has seen no evidence of it during this election.
The postal votes also heaped pressure on the already strained system as a flood of slips arrived at the last minute, making counting even more difficult. There were complaints across the country from voters who said they had no time to post the slips back in time to be counted.
