Showing off some silky skills
THERE are two schools of thought when it comes to what to wear in the breast pocket of a suit. You can keep it cool and crisp with a clean white pocket square, or you can embrace your inner dandy and go for something silky, patterned and flowing foppishly against your lapel.
For the normal working day, that simple pocket square will suffice, doing the minimum to lift your suit and give it a bit of snap and dash. But for an evening event, we’re all in favour of a bit of colour and expression.
“You don’t have much to a suit, so accessories are essential,” says Aquascutum’s head of menswear, Graeme Fidler. “Wearing something in your pocket can add a bit of richness to the look.”
Fidler says your pocket handkerchief needs to compliment the tie but doesn’t need to exactly match – a slight tonal difference can liven things up, for instance by wearing a lilac pocket square with a purple tie.
“A little bit of variation can really lift things, and it really finishes things off.”
