..but schoolmate takes gold
PLYMOUTH schoolgirl Ruta Meilutyte, 15, stole the show in last night’s swimming finals as Liam Tancock narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 100m backstroke.
Meilutyte, who represents her native Lithuania but attends diver Tom Daley’s school in Devon, wept on the podium after beating American Rebecca Soni to gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke.
Tancock, 27, lived up to his billing as a 50m specialist with a storming first length but faded from second to fifth in the last 20m as Matthew Grevers beat fellow American Nick Thoman to gold in an Olympic record 52.16 seconds.
Brit Gemma Spofforth finished fifth in the women’s 100m backstroke as USA’s Missy Franklin took gold, while Robbie Renwick ended sixth as France’s Yannick Angel won the men’s 200m freestyle.
