Joe Root rested as England bid to extend one-day revival
Run-machine Joe Root has been rested for the upcoming limited-overs series with Australia as England bid to continue their one-day revolution against the World Cup winners.
Root has been an ever-present in all formats of the game in recent times but will sit out Monday’s T20 international at Cardiff as well as the subsequent five 50-over clashes.
All-rounder Moeen Ali has been recalled to both squads after missing the limited-overs tussles against New Zealand earlier in the summer, while Warwickshire’s Chris Woakes also returns having recovered from knee and hamstring injuries.
Uncapped Essex seamer Reece Topley has been named in the T20 party along with Hampshire’s James Vince, both of whom were named in the squad to face New Zealand at Old Trafford in June but did not feature.
There is no place in either squad, however, for Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow despite his match-winning performance against New Zealand in the 50-over series decider at Chester-le-Street.
