Public rail is the future: poll by RMT
RAIL union RMT will today release a poll showing 70 per cent of the public support the renationalisation of the railways, weeks before National Express’ East Coast Main Line franchise is set to be brought back under public control.
Only 23 per cent of the 1017 people questioned support continued privatisation in the industry, the poll will say.
The data comes out as the TUC congress, which is due to open today, gets set to discuss the future of the failed East Coast franchise.
It will be the second time since the privatisation of the rail industry in the mid-1990s that part of a network will be put back in the government’s hands.
RMT will be calling for support for the full renationalisation of the railways and London Underground, the union said.
Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers has said the Conservatives want to “stop the constant government meddling which is holding back railways.”
