Pistorius recounts night he shot girlfriend
PARALYMPIC champion Oscar Pistorius yesterday told a South African court his recollection of events the night he shot dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013.
Pistorius, who denies murder, detailed a peaceful night together where they watched television and discussed Valentine’s Day gifts.
The 27-year-old said he later got out of bed to get fans to cool the bedroom and upon his return to the darkened room heard a window opening in the bathroom.
The double amputee then told the court: “I whispered to Reeva to get down and phone the police [as he says he believed an intruder was in the bathroom and she was in their bed]. Before I knew it, I had fired four shots at the door.”
After breaking down the door Pistorius found Steenkamp not breathing. The athlete faces life imprisonment if found guilty.
