CITY VIEWS: DOES TONY BALL DESERVE TO EARN 30M AS ITV BOSS?
ROY PARCHMENT
AVIVA
“That is a huge amount of money for that kind of role. The question is how much value is added by that person to the company? You have to ask how much chief executives contribute to shareholders and profits. If Tony Ball can turn around ITV, then he might be worth it.”
DECLAN WOOLOUGHAN
ERSTE BANKING GROUP
“It’s too much for one man to earn. It should definitely be performance related. Even chief executives of banks and building societies, who are responsible for a lot more risk, aren’t paid that much. I think it’s an obscene amount of money, unless I was earning it of course! But I don’t believe anyone should be paid £30m.
VERONIQUE GUILLAUME
ROYAL BANK OF CANADA
“It is too much for anyone to be paid £30m as a salary. We’ll be getting into the realms of footballers’ pay. They are paid outrageous amounts. If he does turnround the company and does well he probably could command that much. But I think it is far too much money to be on, considering the crack down on City pay.”
SARA JONES
CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD
”No, I don’t think anyone is worth that much money. Considering that there are people who are out of work, bonuses have been stopped and pay freezes enforced, it beggars belief that someone thinks they can demand that much. I don’t think anyone should be on that much money without being able to show the results of their work.”
