New race started by Carney’s run
THERE’S nothing like a race to get the City’s competitive juices flowing – as the London Marathon demonstrates.
And this time it’s not just the running The Capitalist is talking about, it’s the sponsorship.
With Bank of England governor Mark Carney set to don his trainers on Sunday in aid of Cancer Research UK, the Canadian chief’s donor page has become a veritable who’s who of City backers.
Stonking donations such as £2,500 (plus gift aid) from one Dominic Barton – presumably McKinsey & Co managing director – and £1,000 from Lions Head Global Markets partner Bim Hundal, have pushed Carney’s total to above £56,000 online, to add to his £23,000 offline figure.
Others on the donor list include Standard Chartered chairman Sir John Peace, former Barclays chief Martin Taylor, Royal Mail boss Moya Greene, HSBC chief Stuart Gulliver, RBS chief Ross McEwan and Berkeley Group chief Rob Perrins.
With the £100 and £200 offers flowing, it’s good to see not everyone playing the “flaunt the cash” game. CBI chief John Cridland came in with a less flashy, but welcome, £25.
