Mcllroy happy with second
NORTHERN Ireland’s Rory McIlroy last night produced an impressive five-under-par opening round of 67 as Sweden’s Carl Pettersson took the early clubhouse lead at the US PGA Championship.
Pettersson led following a six-under-par round of 66 but though McIlroy’s score was equalled by America’s Gary Woodland and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain, the encouraging improvement against the underwhelming form of recent Majors inspired a considerable optimism ahead of the following three days.
“I think that’s my first bogey-free round in a while and it was a great way to start,” McIlroy said.
Luke Donald, Ernie Els and Justin Rose were among the late starters.
