Facebook trumps Google
FACEBOOK has overtaken the search giant Google to become the most visited website in America.
The social-networking website, founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, had the most hits in the US for the week ending 13 March this year, according to online analyst Hitwise.
It received 7.07 per cent of all internet traffic. Google was just behind it, with 7.03 per cent. Yahoo Mail was third with 3.8 per cent, and Yahoo fourth at 3.67 per cent. Google’s YouTube rounded out the top five with 2.14 per cent.
The trend shows a shift in how internet users look for information. Instead of using a search engine, web users are increasingly using social networks to serve as aggregators of relevant news and information.
Google has long held the top spot. It has been consistently the most visited US web site since it overtook MySpace on 15 September, 2007.
