Tories in iconic buildings pledge
The Conservatives yesterday said they would legislate to protect iconic buildings, ensuring they aren’t obscured by new sky-scraper developments. Shadow arts minister Ed Vaizey said: “These are buildings people treasure and are part of our identity. We hope that the scheme would provide a significant hurdle against intrusive developments.”
Paxman to grill Cameron
David Cameron will face Jeremy Paxman in a half hour interview on BBC Two’s Newsnight, following Gordon Brown’s confirmation he will do the same. Nick Clegg has already appeared before the presenter, putting pressure on other party leaders to follow him.
Tories court the elderly
The Tory leader yesterday said that the elderly were “not a burden or a liability” as he launched a version of his election manifesto for older people. He hit out at the way the media portrayed the over-65s and made a pitch for their vote by promising to protect spending on the NHS.
Brown put on spot by girl
Gordon Brown was yesterday put on the spot by a five-year-old girl who asked for help bringing home her mother, who is stuck in Germany. When Alexi Prima told her story to Brown, who was campaigning in North London, he looked for back up from a local candidate and added: “We are trying to put on more trains.”
