Rory McIlroy secures European Tour Final Series
Golf world No1 Rory McIlroy has been handed special dispensation to play in the European Tour’s end-of-season Final Series despite failing to meet the qualifying criteria.
Players are required to have played in 13 Tour events to compete in the lucrative four-tournament finale but McIlroy has been let off following his summer lay-off with an ankle injury.
“These are exceptional circumstances and I have taken this situation and the resulting decision very seriously,” said European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley.
The Finals Series starts in October with the Turkish Airlines Open and, after a WGC-Champions and BMW Masters in China, ends at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
