Yankees chief Steinbrenner dies
BASEBALL: George Steinbrenner, the owner who turned the New York Yankees into a sporting superpower, died yesterday aged 80.
Steinbrenner, who bought the franchise in 1973 and oversaw 11 Major League titles and seven World Series wins, suffered a massive heart attack.
His family paid tribute in a statement, calling him “a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”
