Woods waiting on Pavin’s wildcard call
TIGER WOODS is expected to get the nod to play in the US Ryder Cup team today.
The world No1 missed out on the eight automatic qualifying places but is hoping to be named as one of captain Corey Pavin’s four wildcard picks for Celtic Manor next month.
Just last month, Woods questioned his place in the side after finishing next to last in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone with an 18-over-par total.
At the time, he said: “I wouldn’t help the team if I’m playing like this. No-one would help the team if they’re shooting 18 over par.”
Since then, however, he has shown glimpses of his former self with 65s at both the Barclays and Deutsche Bank Championship on the PGA?Tour.
Last year’s Open champion Stewart Cink and 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson are leading contenders to join Woods in the 12-man team with Anthony Kim, Rikki Fowler and Lucas Glover also in the hunt.
Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar have already booked their places.
