Watson works on SW19 high
BRITISH No1 Heather Watson is adamant the confidence gained from her form at Wimbledon inspired her straight-sets first round victory over Silvia
Soler Espinosa.
Watson brushed aside the Spaniard 6-2, 6-2 and insisted the momentum she had previously built had been important.
“I’ve been playing very well,” said Watson. “After having a great Wimbledon, I wanted to continue that. I still have the confidence.”
Compatriot Laura Robson also made it through to the next round with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over world No23 Lucie Safarova and hailed the result as a career highlight. “It’s definitely up there with the best wins of my career,” she said.
Robson meets Maria Sharapova next; Watson has Maria Kirilenko.
