Village People? No, just a fun run
MEN and women in uniform caused a stir in Bermondsey yesterday when they gathered for a 5k fun run celebrating emergency service workers.
The run raised funds for public service charities including The Fire Fighters Charity.
The Tunnel 2 Towers run, an annual event supported by emergency service industry workers, saw so many uniformed through the Rotherhithe tunnel to Canary Wharf that at first onlookers thought it was a Village People flashmob.
Rebecca Brett, who lives in Southwark, said: “In hindsight it obviously wasn’t a Village People flashmob, but the mix of uniforms and people in tight running clothes threw me off.” Cheeky.
■ Simon Jordan, the former owner of Crystal Palace football club who made his fortune in the mobile phone industry, has been embracing the Tories’ spirit of austerity after being spotted at this weekend’s tennis with a cracked phone screen. Jordan, who was watching the England v France match at the Queen’s tennis club in West Kensington, stood out from a sea of designer phone cases and tennis bracelets with his post-grunge screen. Rumours have now emerged that fans are crowdfunding for a new handset.
