US probes Google hack
GOOGLE’S claims that hackers, probably from China, sought to access the Gmail accounts of senior US officials are very serious and the American government is investigating them, secretary of state Hillary Clinton said yesterday evening.
Clinton said the US government was “very concerned” about claims that Chinese hackers collected the passwords of Google users.
She added: “These allegations are very serious. We take them seriously, we’re looking into them.”
Google announced on Wednesday that suspected Chinese hackers tried to steal passwords of hundreds of Google email account holders, including senior US government officials, Chinese activists and journalists.
The claim by the world’s largest web search company sparked an angry response from Beijing, which said blaming China was “unacceptable”.
Google and Washington have an increasingly strained relationship with China over its approach to censorship and cyber security.
