Ukraine prime minister Azarov resigns
With Ukrainian MPs set to vote on scrapping a new anti-protest law this morning – in response to the continuing unrest in the country – news that prime minister Mykola Azarov has resigned has just broken.
According to Ukraine's government website, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has reported Azarov's resignation. He said in a statement:
In order to create additional opportunities for socio-political compromise, for the sake of the peaceful settlement of the conflict, I have made a personal decision to ask the Ukrainian president to accept my resignation from the post of Ukrainian prime minister.
Azarov has led Ukraine's government since President Viktor Yanukovych took office in 2010.
