Treasures from the deep
These exquisite pieces from Mikimoto show why pearls are such a timeless classic
If you’re looking for fine pearls, look no further; Japanese firm Mikimoto has had more than 100 years to perfect its trade. In fact, Kokichi Mikimoto was the man who first created the cultured pearl all the way back in 1893. Now the company is one of the most established in the business, with a dazzling array of pearls each carefully vetted – only one in ten makes the grade – before being transformed into exquisite jewellery.
You will always be aware when you’re wearing a string of pearls – they absorb the heat from your body, and regular wearers complain of feeling naked when they are removed.
The new collection above, called Bamboo, is made up of precious Akoya pearls – the variety first cultivated by Mikimoto – from the waters around Japan. They feature specially selected pearls protected within a bamboo cage design, which incorporates diamonds in 18k yellow gold.
