TIPS FROM THE TOP WITH
Football seasons. They seem to come around almost as often as a stock market crash these days and we’ve got another one kicking off tomorrow.
Champions Manchester United are 7/4 to make it title number 20 and that’s certainly where my money is heading. Their squad was often criticised last year yet they still won the league and this time round they have not only improved their squad with the arrivals of Ashley Young and Phil Jones, but Javier Hernandez and Tom Cleverley will get even better. Antonio Valencia won’t be out for half the season and Wayne Rooney’s form shouldn’t desert him so badly again.
I think their nearest rivals could well be their neighbours Manchester City, who are 7/2 for the title, and likely to pip Chelsea who are also capable at 11/4.
I also think reports of Arsenal’s death are a little premature. Cesc Fabregas’ departure will not be as great a loss as many think and whilst they are unlikely to win the title at 9/1 they should keep Liverpool at bay for a top four finish at 8/13. And if Robin Van Persie can stay fit for a whole season he is a great bet for the league’s top scorer at 9/1. The flying Dutchman has scored 18 goals in 17 league games so far in 2011.
