Super Mario sinks holders in Milan
GERMANY international striker Mario Gomez exacted revenge on Inter Milan with an injury time goal which handed Bayern Munich a crucial 1-0 first leg Champions League win at the San Siro.
Bayern were beaten in the final by Inter last May, but the Bundesliga side are now strong favourites to progress to the last eight of this year’s competition after Gomez struck in injury time.
The usually reliable Julio Cesar failed to hold Arjen Robben’s shot from distance and Gomez (above) was on hand to apply the finishing touch.
Esteban Cambiasso missed the best chances for Inter, who also saw striker Samuel Eto’o draw a blank in front of goal as Bayern goalkeeper Thomas Kraft pulled off several impressive saves.
Muller wasted a fine chance early in the second half, while Robben also clipped the outside of the post with a rising shot, but the visitors got their reward through Gomez’s late strike.
