Ojo: Big name Irish backline is best I’ve seen
LONDON Irish back Topsy Ojo is convinced the current squad is the finest he has played alongside as he prepares to make his 200th appearance for the Exiles in the Aviva Premiership against London Wasps tomorrow.
Ojo forms an exciting back three that includes Australian James O’Connor and England international Marland Yarde. And, despite having flirted with the wrong end of the table in recent seasons, the 28-year-old insists his current team-mates have everything about them to get Irish soaring once again.
“The boys I am playing with in the back line right now are definitely up there with the best I have played with during my 199 games,” said Ojo.
“We have had some unreal players over the years and when I first broke into the team the likes of Delon [Armitage] and Sailosi Tagicakibau were just amazing.
“James and Marland are similar in that they are really attacking players of international class who can do wonders when given the ball.
“They are high quality players who are starting to link up and starting to understand how to play together and given some more time I am sure it will all click.”
Elsewhere, Harlequins travel to Newcastle Falcons on Sunday and hooker Dave Ward is determined to keep up his side’s recent winning sequence.
Quins have picked up three straight victories since Ward made the No2 shirt his own and the forward is delighted to be playing regular top-flight rugby.
“I had my first Premiership start for about seven years this season,” he said.
“I’d played for Bath against Newcastle in 2006 and now we’re playing them this weekend – it all comes round in circles.”
Table-topping Saracens host Sale Sharks tomorrow.
