Murray conqueror Stan survives Querrey thriller
ANDY MURRAY’S conqueror Stanislas Wawrinka powered his way into his first Grand Slam quarter-final last night after a gruelling five-set thriller with Sam Querrey.
Wawrinka, the Swiss 25th seed, was pegged back twice by the American before coming through 7-6, (11-9) 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in four hours 28 minutes at Flushing Meadows.
He now takes on Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny, who blasted his way into the last eight with a 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who, at 41, was the lowest-ranked player in the draw.
“It’s the first time in a year that I have already had two quarter-finals in Grand Slams,” a delighted Youzhny said.
“It maybe means I’m starting to play a little bit more consistently. I hope to continue.”
Meanwhile, it was a mixed day for the British hopefuls in the junior events. Laura Robson cruised into the third round of the girls’ singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Chanelle van Nguyen, but Oliver Golding and George Morgan both lost in the boys’.
