Meet Athens’ new kid on the block
EUCLID TSAKALOTOS is a fellow Greek economist and government colleague of Yanis Varoufakis – pictured earlier this month hitching a ride on the finance minister’s motorbike after a crunch meeting in Athens. Tsakalotos is seen as a more quietly-spoken and diplomatic character than Varoufakis, whose style has riled some fellow Eurozone ministers. As the head of Greece’s new negotiating team, analysts believe Tsakalotos may be about to effectively usurp his colleague during crucial talks with Greece’s international lenders. He has studied at the universities of Kent, Sussex and Oxford, gaining his PhD at the latter in 1989. Since the mid-1990s he taught at universities in Athens, and authored several books. In May 2012 he was elected as a Syriza MP in the Greek capital.
